School Safety

All staff members are responsible for the safety of students from the time they come under school supervision until the leave school supervision [Board Policy 5142(a)].  The following general procedures and policies are in place at Juarez Academy to ensure the safety of our school community:
    • All staff are equipped with 2-way radio communication
    • Emergency procedures training takes place on a regular basis (staff and students)
    • Release of students is limited to those on the Emergency Contacts list
      • NOTE: Students can only be pulled out of school early by a parent or guardian, unless the parent/guardian has contacted the school to inform otherwise
  • School office hours are from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
  • Students should arrive no earlier than 8:00 AM.  Adult supervision is provided for students from 8:00 AM until the end of the school day at 2:35 PM.  It is unsafe for students to be on campus when there is no adult supervision.
    • Parents who need care/supervision before 8:00 AM, can enroll in the ABC EXCELS morning program. Please contact the office for more information.
  • Students are expected to be picked up from school at dismissal time.
  • EARLY PICK UP - if you have a need to pick up your child early, please do so before 2:20 PM.  During the last 15 minutes of the day, teachers are giving directions for homework, cleaning up and getting students organized to go home.  When we call classrooms during this end of day period, it is a disruption that prevents teachers from making sure that students are able to transition home or to after school programs successfully.  We ask that you please AVOID early pick ups between 2:20-2:35 PM, if possible.
  • Students may enter school through the quad gate at the front of the school.  Students who walk home or who are picked up by parents after school exit through the gates on Elaine Street.  Kinder students should be picked up outside their classrooms using the Kinder gate on Aclare Street.
  • For the safety of students and staff, Juarez is a closed campus. All entry doors and gates are locked during the school day.
  •  All visitors, including parents, who enter campus during the school day, must sign in/out at the office and show proof of identity and are subject to processing through our Raptor Identification System.
  • When picking up your child at the end of the day, please park and walk up to the Elaine Street gates to wait for your child.
  • If an older sibling is picking up your child, he/she must also wait outside of the gates.
  • Students need to walk on sidewalks.  Please avoid walking through parking lots before or after school.  Please use the sidewalks.  Follow the directions of school personnel on duty.
  • Students who walk to and from school should avoid loitering along the way and avoid strangers.
  • Students who are bus riders must have their Zpass with them daily.  Bus riders are expected to ride the bus daily.
  • In the morning, parents may pull into the parking lot and use the designated drop-off lane ONLY.
  • Pull as far forward as possible within the drop off zone (green curb).
  • Have your children exit the car directly on to the sidewalk.
  • Be sure your children have their school materials ready to go and have them exit the car promptly once you stop in the drop off area. If student materials are in the trunk of the car, we ask that you please find parking on the street so as NOT to disrupt the flow of traffic in the drop off lane.
  • After school, the PARKING LOT IS CLOSED.  This is for the safety of all students and drivers as there are many buses that must pick up in the parking lot after school.
  • If you are picking your child up after school, he/she will exit through the Elaine Street gate and NOT the front gate.
  • ALL drivers are expected to follow courteous and safe driving practices.
  • Students should not be dropped off across the street and/or be allowed to walk through traffic unattended by an adult.
  • The green curb in the parking lot is for loading and unloading of students only.  Do not leave cars unattended.
  • Double parking is NOT permitted in the parking lot or on the city street.  Be aware that periodically the Cerritos Sheriff’s Dept. patrols the area and they will ticket anyone who violates traffic and safety laws.
We must be able to contact parents/guardians immediately in an emergency.  It is critical that parents/guardians keep the emergency release information up to date.  Parents may update contact and emergency information as follows:
  • Update information through your Parent Portal Account
  • Contact the school office to make changes

Juarez has a Safety Plan that outlines the many ways we work to keep Juarez safe.  Steps are taken as needed to improve school safety.  At Juarez, we conduct: fire drills, lock-down drills, earthquake drills, and active-shooter drills.
In the event of an emergency, students will not be released until it is safe.  Students will only be released to people who are listed on the emergency card, and who have proper identification.  Please be assured that your children’s safety is a top priority at Juarez Academy. If you have any questions regarding school safety, please contact the office.
